Mission Statement
The Petaluma Youth Soccer League (PYSL) is
a California Non-Profit Corporation dedicated to providing a comprehensive program
of fun, safe soccer instruction and organized team
play for the children of Petaluma.
Organization
The PYSL organization is
detailed on the League page. See
the Contacts, Bylaws and
Rules pages for additional information.
Programs
The Petaluma Youth Soccer League (PYSL) offers programs of all levels
for children between the ages of 5 to 19. The PYSL is organized into
three Clubs; the Developmental Club, the Recreation Club and the
Competitive Club. Below is a summary of each Club.
The Petaluma Developmental Club
The Developmental Club is a first level introductory soccer
program for children. Player ages are from 5 to 7. No scores or
standings are kept for this group. There are three Developmental
Clubs; Valley (southeast Petaluma), Coastal (west Petaluma), and
Adobe (northeast Petaluma). Teams are assigned by Directors who try
to group children by their school. Games are played within the
clubs area of Petaluma. Teams in the Under 6 league and the Under 7
league are formed with both boys and girls on a team. In the Under 6
& 7 leagues, three players from each team are on the field at
any time. Teams in the Under 8 league are formed with only boys or
only girls on a team. In the Under 8 leagues, five players from each
team are on the field at any time.
The Petaluma Recreation Club
The Recreation Club is a fun first soccer program for children
from ages 8 to 19. Teams in the Recreation Club are formed with only
boys or only girls on a team. This Club is also variously known as
Class IV and House League. There are six Recreation Clubs; Boy
Clubs and Girl Clubs for each Valley (southeast Petaluma), Coastal
(west Petaluma), and Adobe (northeast Petaluma). Teams are formed at
a coach selected Draft with only boys or only girls on a team. In
the Under 10 leagues, eight players from each team are on the field
at any time. Under 10, 12 and 14 teams play in a city-wide league.
Under 16 and 19 teams play in a District Playing League, which can
include games throughout our District.
Under 10, 12 and 14 league play culminates with all teams playing
in the City Cup tournament. Winners of the round robin league play
are eligible to play in District Cup. Under 16 and 19 teams can
apply to play in a post season state-wide Association Cup
tournament.
The Petaluma Competitive Clubs
The Petaluma Competitive Clubs are responsible for operating the
competitive soccer program for the Petaluma Youth Soccer League.
Both clubs are operated by a Board who are responsible for setting
policies, fees, recruiting qualified coaches, holding city-wide
player tryouts, and operating two statewide tournaments. The mission of the
competitive clubs is to provide a soccer program dedicated to the development and
sustaining of a consistent, safe, positive and quality environment
which will assist youth soccer players attain their highest possible
level of personal soccer skills, tactics, strategies, overall
proficiency and sportsmanship through proper teaching, training and
competition.
Competitive Program
The competitive program is structured into two clubs: SCA for Division 1 and
United for Division 3. Division 1 is the highest level of soccer offered in the state
of California and is designed for the player who is highly talented
and committed to the game of soccer. Division 3 is for the player who
desires a more challenging experience than "house" ball but hasn't
attained the performance level needed for Division 1.
Sometimes called Traveling teams, the Petaluma Competitive Teams
represent the Petaluma Youth Soccer League in the District V Playing
League of the California Youth Soccer Association. These teams
typically play six home games and six "away" games (most usually
played in Marin, Napa and Sonoma counties) during September,
October, and November.
During the entire month of August, and on the last weekend of
September through December, teams may participate in tournaments
where they play teams from other districts to further sharpen their
skills. Class I teams attend the culminating event of their year,
State Cup, which is held in January for the younger teams, and in
March for the older teams.
